E-mail address: [email protected] In this paper, we study allocation strategies and their effects on total routing costs in hub networks. Given a set of nodes with pairwise traffic demands, the p-hub median problem is the problem of choosing p nodes as hub locations and routing traffic through these hubs at minimum cost. This problem has two versions; in single allocation problems, each node can send and receive traffic through a single hub, whereas in multiple allocation problems, there is no such restriction and a node may send and receive its traffic through all p hubs. This results in high fixed costs and complicated networks. In this study, we introduce the r-allocation p-hub median problem, where each node can be connected to at most r hubs. This new problem generalizes the two versions of the p-hub median problem. We derive mixedinteger programming formulations for this problem and perform a computational study using wellknown datasets. For these datasets, we conclude that single allocation solutions are considerably more expensive than multiple allocation solutions, but significant savings can be achieved by allowing nodes to be allocated to two or three hubs rather than one. We also present models for variations of this problem with service quality considerations, flow thresholds, and non-stop service. 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Robust uncapacitated multiple allocation hub location problem under demand uncertainty: minimization of cost deviations

The hub location–allocation problem under uncertainty is a real-world task arising in the areas such as public and freight transportation and telecommunication systems. In many applications, the demand is considered as inexact because of the forecasting inaccuracies or human’s unpredictability. This study addresses the robust uncapacitated multiple allocation hub location problem with a set of ...

Capacitated Single Allocation P-Hub Covering Problem in Multi-modal Network Using Tabu Search

The goals of hub location problems are finding the location of hub facilities and determining the allocation of non-hub nodes to these located hubs. In this work, we discuss the multi-modal single allocation capacitated p-hub covering problem over fully interconnected hub networks. Therefore, we provide a formulation to this end. The purpose of our model is to find the location of hubs and the ...

Designing Incomplete Hub Location-routing Network in Urban Transportation Problem

In this paper, a comprehensive model for hub location-routing problem is proposed which no network structure other than connectivity is imposed on backbone (i.e. network between hub nodes) and tributary networks (i.e. networks which connect non-hub nodes to hub nodes). This model is applied in public transportation, telecommunication and banking networks. In this model locating and routing is c...

A Congested Double Path Approach for a Hub Location-allocation Problem with Service Level at Hubs

In this paper an uncapacitated multiple allocation p-hub median problem is discussed. The model minimizes the transportation cost based on inventory service level at hubs through double paths between hubs. Inventory service level is defined as the percent of inventory shortage of vehicles at hubs according to passengers demand and replenishment time of vehicles. A real data from 25 nodes of mun...

Moreover, there is a set of available capacities for each potential hu...
